They actually got it right this time.

Star Wars—Episode II: Attack of the Clones had a lot to make up for and tons to live up to. As a “classic” Star Wars fan, I was extremely disappointed with Episode I. Basically, it was a ‘menace’. But let’s not rehash that sad excuse for a movie.

Attack of the Clones had it’s good and bad points, but the fact that there were good points puts it lightyears ahead of Menace. In the awe-inspiring tone of the first trilogy, the first 15 minutes of Attack of the Clones were 10 times better than Menace. The action was on target and the history of our beloved Star Wars was well-told.

The adventure chronicles Anakin Skywalker’s journey to the dark side. Scenes of anger and passion lay the groundwork for the evil Darth Vader we all know and love.

My favorite revelation was learning the motivation for the hero-villain Boba Fett’s precise and serious future livelihood. Just like in the classic Star Wars I found myself hoping he would beat the good guys.

I do have my complaints, though.

In the classic episodes we never met Padmé Amidala. I felt like pushing the fast forward button to get past her. Thank goodness the scenes were so pitiful that they’re now a distant memory. Amidala’s character wasn’t convincing or interesting. She’s too frail, soft-spoken, and fake to have mothered the tempestuous, deep-voiced, Princess Leia. The feeble attempt to construct her as such succeeded only in making her annoying.

You may want to take a quick nap when Amidala’s scenes start, but all in all I give it a thumb’s up. Classic fans will definitely find themselves saying, “Oh! So that’s why…!”  Now, if only we get to meet a young Lando Calrissian.
